Red, Green & Blue: Is It Time to Just Live With Climate Change?
An article in this week’s Time magazine raises an interesting point about climate change. While there’s a growing consensus that global warming is real, the author writes, there’s also an emerging body of opinion that says it’s either too late to stop it or it’s not worth trying to stop. We’d be better off, these pundits say, investing in ways to make it easier to deal with the effects of climate change: build stronger dams, dikes and levees; do more to prevent the spread of diseases like malaria; provide more aid to help the poor live with increasingly hotter, or damper, or drier, or stormier conditions; etc.
While my initial reaction to people like Bjorn Lomborg, who has written, Cool It: The Skeptical Environmentalist’s Guide to Global Warming, has been to get irritated and defensive, some nagging voice in the back of my head has been asking, "What if they’re right?" What if we really would be better just forging ahead with a sort-of global Marshall Plan to protect people from the potential impact of climate change, and throw in the towel on trying to curb emissions, tax carbon, etc. After all, the political will to do anything meaningfully preventive seems lacking around the world (in some places more than in others). Is reactive the better way to go? And, if so, is there any more political will for that approach?

Andrew,
Si, sono in accordo!
And so many diverse contributors!

Hi Max,
YES, you express reality!
Let’s look at the real priorities concerning the much neglected human suffering in the real world out there!
If there is real global warming, beyond the VERY BRIEF regional variations that are now being reported, (and which seem typical of the past), there will be both winners and losers in humanity. Other species will adapt by migration etc, as they have done so in the past.

Hi jgroves,
So remind us; what was the relative strength of Katrina to many other previous hurricanes again, and (rather importantly) WHEREABOUTS they may have made landfall?
And…..why did Chris Landsea (A very noted hurricane expert), resign in disgust and anger from the IPCC?
And, what happened to all those terrible hurricanes that were forecast to follow in 2006>?
Concerning Bjorn Lomberg….some will agree with him, and some will disagree….are you trying to evidence some ultimate truth? If so, please be specific.

Hi richardbell,
How about you give some actual examples of YOUR perspective on what YOU think are some convincing examples of Lomborg’s lies? If you do that, there may be something to debate in this thread!
Might it be that there are other people in this world that think that Lomberg is pointing generally in the right direction? (not necessarily with absolute perfection)

… and for some reason the evil humans caused it this time???????????? LOL, I love it when people inadvertently prove AGW makes no sense!

You wrote: “the worst scenario that came out of the IPCC’s report…”
“+6.4°: Most of life is exterminated”
Pretty scary stuff, with methane hydrates breaking down at precisely 6.4 deg C warmer temperatures than today and Earth turning into a very unhospitable place for everyone.
Fortunately this is not science, but pure science fiction. But it would make a good Hollywood story…

Glad to see you are back. We need a few calm voices of reason to counterbalance the doomsday hysteria.

Hi Shirley,
I’m in accord with most of what you have elaborated, but could you please clarify what you said immediately above in part:
“First, the infamous hockey stick is not the only temperature reconstruction showing a warming climate – it’s just the one that’s gotten the most attention. Dozens of other historical reconstructions have shown the same thing…”
Are you suggesting that there are dozens of other studies that show that the current regional climate variations are UNPRECEDENTED?
If so, could you point to say one or two, the more the merrier.
This is a very important question.
